钱财 | On Money

; D- E' F0 i7 G# o; z& C# y城市里的人们,脸上都挂着疲倦和痛苦的表情。究竟为什么会这样呢?经过我的详细观察  N' g$ M/ o+ l( i( y4 [+ u

# `- p# ^. I3 |# _* u! y" o,发现大多是因为钱财。

, @& d' i4 D* J- R) D
5 \' g4 C' i9 V0 g) A. mCity dwellers usually wear a look of weariness and worry. Why is that so? After my careful
3 @  `5 X. Y- \1 X! E5 e. T5 ~' u6 H6 w" m; [
observation, I find money issues are largely to blame.; Q5 R9 k6 s3 K
+ j# ?+ L1 e- ]4 a
众生赖以生存的这付臭皮囊,如果不幸降临于都市,就时刻需要钱财的支撑,否则就会轰
) a) Q6 A( d! N- V' ?% W7 G3 r8 A% p6 o2 G1 L
然坍塌。也许有的人会说:“不可能吧?”但在都市里,你会处处感觉到钱财的重要性。

; z  i* ~7 M5 T6 ]无论吃饭、穿衣、看病、睡觉,甚至上厕所,也离不开钱。真的应了那句话:“钱不是万
5 b5 L- q% e' T1 v
9 C. T5 w1 E4 j能的,但没有钱是万万不能的。”

& N. E9 T: K/ E  r
9 `- |6 L; z0 h' E, DThis sack of flesh and bones that we humans survive in, if it fatefully lands in a city, will need the
5 s- \" f4 T* e4 _! H8 ?" V
/ ]( k! B, z3 S& q! `& f% Uconstant support of money. Otherwise, it will fall with a thump. Some of you may argue: “That’s
2 y9 T) Y! n4 {( P: p9 H+ U$ \8 [9 {
not quite possible!” But in the city, one is forced to be keenly aware of the power of money. Any/ x0 ]6 @" r+ A$ H; D: @) q; |8 e3 V/ A

5 Y( [. P6 g6 Z8 ?5 ?) _- e% oactivity—be it eating, buying clothes, and seeing the doctor, sleeping, even going to the( M  x1 E8 u, U0 @

0 w, B  M9 w2 u: E5 _6 w8 T: ~toilet—calls for money. It is exactly how the saying goes: “Money is not almighty, but without: \0 D2 c0 b6 u. Q+ U. u
4 @  x! L3 l7 o' c) q! c
money nothing can be done.”; i) S! t2 E6 h" r1 e

! v$ D# ^5 i' u7 g没有钱,都市人的一切生存活动都不得不停滞。为了五蕴所构建的这部机器能正常运转,
' [$ j8 M) I0 ?" p3 Q# p" U; K
9 w% S; ~" h% r2 d9 `人不得不像奴仆一样,为这部机器的能源——钱财而搏斗。我时常在想,如果人能像蚯蚓  P1 Z, F* P( ?. }
1 H" A) g. a( w: O* {- d& p
一样吃土也能生存该多好啊!但现实无情地告诉我,城市人要寻求生存的因是异常困难的
+ o) J4 o9 ~2 _( u% J. C9 R6 `
, u( c2 t; U& x/ t3 n5 P0 m

# ]8 B4 b! Y. E/ G+ e0 n
- F5 [: \* K8 h' O  D9 MWith no money, all living activities in the city have to come to a halt. In order to have our body
, m+ T0 u; d8 Y: a8 [+ D3 R/ y: B9 r( j6 J, a) i
machine, the composite of five aggregates, function normally; humans have to struggle like
: j; A% T) G0 w& Y, F. R& @, |4 K! i
5 Y* X7 ~  s* M5 P; O- C4 f' d0 Vslaves to garner the source of its fuel—money. I often think, wouldn’t it be wonderful if humans5 }( _  u, u$ v, d0 g! O8 ]
7 Z, U* c5 W3 ?/ Z+ _5 c
could survive just by imbibing soil like the earthworm! But cruel reality tells me otherwise: for+ ~# ]" L) o" {# x5 z
: U0 t* I& D  R) T0 Y; @1 o/ S
people living in the city, the provisions to survive are by no means easy to come by.! x# `" p; I! @( ~* G: C2 j1 I
7 t( f+ B1 T# a( @: v( O# d5 y
所以,城市的人只有忙忙碌碌。不论他是谁,都会感受为钱财奔波而带来的痛苦。以前以. s) o* K3 X3 A2 d1 v; s

  I' _) q$ E/ {% `1 B* s% k7 m; b3 {为城市人过着天人一般的日子,现在方知,他们更是备受煎熬啊!这一切,令我想起山里5 |% X1 f: D8 j6 s$ v0 P
& W% E: }6 E! w, Z0 g, q1 Z
的修行人。在山里,除了食物,不需要为更多的事操心,生存的因自然具足。同样是10009 x. Q; `4 ]7 R/ O3 X
  c9 V; _7 l! \0 a5 z- T# {1 b
元,在山里,就是腰板挺直的大富翁;然而在城市里,却有捉襟见肘、相形见绌的感觉。

$ Z. ^  G  _& r' i$ n/ ?( G% HConsequently, city folks are reduced to being always on the run. The anguish of having to work
! f! K& h, o3 L" n9 f* S
2 |. I* u/ t' n* d2 \9 \hard for money is felt by practically everyone. Previously I had the illusion that people in the city9 m8 g7 M* b1 R/ {: h8 `

/ T# G3 F5 _2 z" S: M, Plive like celestial beings; only now do I come to see the extra agony they have to endure. This
! N. [! o3 z7 i  ^
+ n* _6 O( ~, G  _& Creminds me of those spiritual seekers deep in the mountains where the environment is naturally4 g2 u1 h! ]  F! [% ~" F) c! g

2 N: n( X7 l$ K* D! @conducive to survival. Other than food, there are not too many things to worry about, and a4 M+ [1 S5 v+ P" f6 G
! J- ~2 s7 [7 J3 c3 L2 s
person with 1,000 yuan can stand tall and be considered a rich person. While in the city, the
  u, t. e( ^2 v* J; }" _, i, P4 V* x
same amount of money won’t go too far; one is unable to make ends meet and will feel a sense; c, W" b2 d- c6 P/ c

! Y2 v. R$ O7 k$ w3 n9 V- mof inferiority.! u8 M  E' Z. R& m# G3 v
, l. \7 }; ~6 }1 b- N
作为修行人,就是应当以积累圣者七财为荣,积累世间钱财为耻,视清贫为最好的伴侣。& |; G* A% H, m2 X9 i/ |; \! n: i
0 V! ^1 t2 h+ j' d! J5 w
噶当派大德们最推崇的教言就是:

. D0 S( T) L9 ?9 d. ]1 V
8 a- w0 }: |# k# JA spiritual seeker should be defined as one who is proud of accruing the seven noble riches, who
$ N" Q; I3 c/ g1 X: k4 e# L: X. h. i& i# }7 D$ L& d
is ashamed of amassing worldly possessions, and who regards poverty as a dear companion. The! w: b/ n3 r, O  h# e

* T5 t9 q3 o3 O+ Y) S3 E/ p6 Q8 x2 dmost celebrated teaching among the Kadampa masters is:
, g. g) S( N$ r, v1 ~* r. B) e5 a# B( C4 t4 n' w  d4 F
“心依于法,法依于贫,贫依于死,死依于壑。”
0 O  U& g1 {" m: E; s5 v! O" w

( l7 p2 \. E. _% W5 pBase your mind on the Dharma,
/ a% F$ Y; A8 U% u1 g/ y9 @, o, o9 Z; m$ t/ x5 u
Base your Dharma on a humble life,# ?6 P' n# F5 a! a+ `

( a& x3 H+ t% g% T; h( gBase your humble life on the thought of death,3 f  Q9 o0 o2 v3 H) ~5 A

0 {8 M& K$ `6 }, dBase your death on a lonely cave.
) |. W6 ~/ q& d" X9 _0 m$ R( j1 k* ?2 [5 }! S$ K8 t
富贵荣华足以使人痴迷,而贫贱却足以使人睿智。
- E4 s! W( V0 a6 I3 m; q3 C

7 @9 @6 V6 G4 l. ~6 K( p! @) h7 ?Wealth and power make one obsessive and indulgent, while poverty and humility impart to one
1 b- V! L* h# P/ S- e) t$ B0 z1 {9 V9 M
vision and wisdom.

8 U" i- V7 X7 c7 B汉地也有“一等和尚轻飘飘,二等和尚一大包,三等和尚压弯了腰”的说法
" Z6 ~7 B4 M7 Z  ^( O
% a. a8 o6 Z6 g  h3 I6 u, `% O
There is also a saying in the Han area: “The monk of the highest caliber is light and at ease, the

: E9 }" v3 _. A4 N; u# A$ Vmonk of the second rank holds a big sack, the monk of the third rank stoops with weight.”) S+ u% K" {3 f4 T3 s, F

一位藏地的大德,在英国作学者期间,每月发工资前,就将上月的节余全部布施,自己却

/ ]9 N6 M) o5 l: y- u1 W( p穿着破旧的衣衫。很多慕名而去拜见他的人,都难以将眼前这个外表寒碜的人,与修证圆
& m& k, `' p7 _& W. E' x: n( c* f
& J% G& D: x% a# Y* g& |满、学富五车的藏地著名大成就者的名称联系在一起。这种行为,实在令人赞叹。

Some time ago, an erudite Tibetan went to England as a visiting scholar. Each month before

; ]5 V( i1 j  E6 cpayday, he would offer all the money he saved from the previous month to charity, keeping for& u1 J# I  G+ ~& V& P

himself only old ragged clothes. When visitors sought him out with admiration, they found it
# b% b! V7 o& Z7 Z, [
4 ]8 I! W; n7 j( Z0 B$ J# m. K& Mhard to match the humble, scrubby person they saw with the famous Tibetan siddha of perfect" l1 f; z: D6 V/ w5 [, Q+ p+ P
( }$ {8 f1 a' b" b1 q; e3 p9 a: S
learning and accomplishment. His conduct deserves our highest praise.3 R8 n& O& z! E- y% q! G
5 d$ u5 {& h( v2 q) _( b$ ^' T7 h/ `$ F
无数的大德们都为我们做出了表率,我们实应心无旁骛地依止于贫穷。

; j: F5 [0 B( GInnumerable sages have shown us perfect examples; we should abide in poverty without the' w4 @9 p. I5 u3 K# X7 Q# ]
