长久——索达吉堪布
修行是一项旷日持久的艰苦过程。无垢光尊者说:“修行不能仅靠几天的努力,需要长期的
2 h% [6 r5 r# U奋斗。”如果能长期坚持不懈地精勤,既可磨炼意志,又可积攒资粮。
" E3 O& m7 x# d* w6 PSpiritual practice is a challenging process that takes time and endurance. Longchen Rabjam says:
: o# T) P: B2 S0 G“Spiritual practice is not a few days’ effort only; it is a long struggle.” By practicing diligently and
& @) l  T. U# n* _( Qpersistently for a long period, not only we can sharpen our willpower but also accumulate vast
& H' h4 i9 S- _3 ?0 S& ]merit.
2 b4 v2 b0 ?$ X) L! S" i0 S, J7 u) s& @记得小时候有一位叫扎拉的阿姨,不仅年轻美丽,而且诚信佛法。她曾跟随村里人一起到  ?4 H, S1 j2 M1 T' W" x
拉萨朝圣。30年前,她曾在上师前发愿,每天磕头100个,念诵极乐愿文1遍,金刚萨埵心3 A, R+ V3 _: G: u
咒10000遍。当时尚处于宗教受到严重摧毁的恐怖时期,念经诵咒尚可默默完成,但磕头% i+ s, ~9 p7 R3 ?! H) \
就有很大困难。除了在家里,她常在放牧时偷偷到一山洞里磕头,并叮嘱我为其放哨。常
. g3 [3 x; N5 o常趁没人之时,我就提醒她:“你该磕头了!”
1 o: B2 ]  f0 k  y% sI remember when I was a child, there was a beautiful young aunt called Drala. As a devout
+ R9 w" l2 {6 J. [Buddhist, she made a pilgrimage to Lhasa with local villagers and pledged to her teacher that
, B( {  n$ D3 t: ~( l1 Vevery day, she would perform 100 prostrations, read once the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the 1 R) m" ?# E1 a' c) w$ {  ~
Pure Land of Great Bliss, and recite 10,000 times the Vajrasattva mantra. That was 30 years ago , }1 M9 z5 F/ B0 X, v& y
when religions were being destroyed ruthlessly. In that horrific period, one might manage to $ N5 F9 n, D' G7 b' `; O+ k- \
recite mantras or read sutras silently without getting caught; but prostrations presented a bigger
2 V/ C. C9 t: z: I7 D5 @3 ?problem. Besides doing it at home, she also tried the accumulation in mountain caves when / v, C* ~) {1 D* z6 M
herding, and would always ask me to stand guard for her. When no one was around, I would 7 [; K: J1 K- y8 C0 D0 y# N# Y( k
always remind her: “It’s time for you to do prostrations!”
" b! o. ?2 ]: N# W1 [+ q8 L% i时光荏苒,30年时光匆匆流逝。其间我经历了读书、出家等一系列变故。去年7月,我在
$ l0 D0 E# N3 h! D* ]老家碰见她,她的脸上已刻满了历经沧桑的痕迹。想起当年磕头的经历,连忙问她:“您还1 K/ {/ S% B9 c' M' f2 M$ s
在继续磕头念咒吗?”她回答我:“从来没间断过,即使生了大病,病后仍然补上。现在时  _- d. ~3 e# I( z
间更多了,可以念更多的咒子。”“那这么多年您一共磕了多少头?念了多少咒?”“没统计过# e% B% E0 {8 n! p$ W
,我想只要好好修持就行了,没有去统计什么数量。”: y, l+ K0 o5 W$ k
Time elapsed quickly; 30 years had slipped by before I met her in my hometown last July. During 8 Z- y2 m7 Q  r. a; O2 [+ r. c
this period I had gone through stages of schooling and become a monk. For her, the experience
) P. K9 S0 H  t) G% |8 Cof life’s ups and downs had chiseled her face. Reminiscing about the old days, I quickly asked her:
+ x% |4 ?( B3 e1 |; q“Are you still continuing prostrations and recitations?” She answered: “Certainly. I’ve never
8 E5 l% C  t& H8 U( i& fstopped. Even if I missed them during my episodes of severe illness, I always managed to make + x! I- ?  n' T. }
them up after recovery. Now, with more free time on hand, I can recite even more mantras.” I
7 b5 q( K/ f7 p9 uasked, “Then, through all these years, how many prostrations and mantra recitations have you , x1 N# E6 f8 M1 n2 x% j& m: s
done in total?” She replied, “I have not really kept track of them. I feel practicing alone is good
6 t% P3 _' {# F4 E" _5 Qenough and have never cared to count the numbers.”! I3 ?' s' T0 |5 C
我在心里为其保守地算了一下。这30年她至少磕头1,095,000个,念诵极乐愿文10950遍,! D; F$ e1 ^4 X+ g
金刚萨埵心咒109,500,000遍。这对于很多人来说不着啻为天文数字。扎拉是藏族中极其
5 a  M% e1 `  N/ x: _, D: N' W普通的一位教徒,既没有名声,也不算最精进。但她能30年如一日地以磨杵成针的毅力锲+ V2 V: G/ a' H& t% z" |$ S* ~
而不舍地修行。实为难能可贵。
! m# A$ n, X6 Y1 ?7 vI made a mental calculation. Conservatively, in the past 30 years, she could have done at least $ F7 ]" l8 V8 v/ c7 E
1,095,000 prostrations, read the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the Pure Land of Great Bliss
- n( }6 M9 @. u4 I& Y4 g, O10,950 times, and recited the Vajrasattva mantra 109,500,000 times. For many people, these
( x" |' O; m1 L2 ^1 Z/ ]  S" Tfigures may seem astronomical. Drala is all but an average practitioner commonly seen among
" ]% B6 `8 |# O2 }" s& @" X% ATibetans, little known, nor extraordinarily diligent. Nonetheless, that she has kept her practice
% ^3 ?+ b# S7 w. A' @throughout 30 years with the perseverance of “grinding an iron pestle down to a needle” is truly
+ O9 y% X( Z: @2 g$ @0 tpraiseworthy./ I5 o- [1 P0 G: O. B" e( M, u% f
现在有的人修完一遍50万加行,就四处炫耀,唯恐他人不知。扎拉却能默默无闻,从不间
6 \1 Y7 W1 e# z+ z$ B断,的确令人叹服。反观自己,虽然在上师前发了愿,却没有如法行持,虽然被别人称为/ @1 Y9 O) o/ f$ X" L! w- t
法师,却不如一个普通人,真令我汗颜。古人云:“骐骥一跃,不能千里;驽马十驾,功在
. ^. b* w# p% I* E不舍。”6 x2 T3 \, @% k: s; Z! p! H# u
These days there are practitioners who can’t wait to flaunt around their completion of one cycle 4 d8 m- C% ^3 w
of 500,000 preliminaries, lest someone would miss their accomplishment. Drala, on the other / G7 ?! g9 w2 N* P! Z& N0 F! S
hand, cares not for recognition but only to practice persistently; she is indeed admirable. ' P0 o" r# C# [  O0 f# ~* r/ D# W
Checking my own progress, I had made pledges before my master, but I have not practiced
0 L4 w5 K' `& F$ c5 u( }5 `: Iauthentically; I have been addressed as a spiritual teacher, but I am no better than common
' K- F1 }& ?) {, O$ _% Dpeople. Shouldn’t I blush with shame?
. Y/ M# [6 z% x8 JThe ancient saying goes:
0 ~  s6 ?. \. z. WOne gallop of a noble steed remains one gallop of distance, not 10 gallops.
9 M; ?6 e: f% wTen days of effort of pulling a cart by an inferior horse, on the other hand, would cover 10 days’
  }- v" R1 I4 C- F& m9 c1 P; Adistance.. }- ~% f0 R5 T. h8 x0 ?! T
Success comes from doing the task persistently.
2 l% V' F9 y5 T- l, ]+ |如果每个修行人都能有此精神,有一分付出,就一定会有一分收获的。! |( }- E4 E5 [2 k8 i( V7 L2 B0 I0 X4 _
Every practitioner should embrace such an enduring spirit. With every ounce of effort put in,
0 M7 D/ L% u: b! T4 x' Gthere is bound to be an ounce of reward.
