0 ?) a3 _+ b* u; J& n城市里的人们,脸上都挂着疲倦和痛苦的表情。究竟为什么会这样呢?经过我的详细观察
3 |" _* ]" [/ Y/ M0 ^7 n& B3 @5 H# {% Y4 C- Z% `# [
,发现大多是因为钱财。
! A* U3 C8 t# _: c: w) V
: h9 Z( h  x% h4 P2 y. j
City dwellers usually wear a look of weariness and worry. Why is that so? After my careful( }8 q& x7 x4 `: M, Q* f8 ?
2 K5 a; t$ I2 o! k& U- a) \
observation, I find money issues are largely to blame.
4 e( O8 @2 W/ Z  f: _3 a0 i& h5 z0 G
众生赖以生存的这付臭皮囊,如果不幸降临于都市,就时刻需要钱财的支撑,否则就会轰, J8 Z# v7 \& H: J% m- t; R7 L/ [- B3 p

1 _( g9 O1 T8 w% A! C# r* P然坍塌。也许有的人会说:“不可能吧?”但在都市里,你会处处感觉到钱财的重要性。' z8 \: `- b) z7 f1 A' x
" }1 D1 I! w1 \2 {8 V& K4 |* d) n
无论吃饭、穿衣、看病、睡觉,甚至上厕所,也离不开钱。真的应了那句话:“钱不是万2 v+ J* Y* R+ u' O( a6 J* y+ L

' |: A& J( z! G) a3 h$ W能的,但没有钱是万万不能的。”
. _/ Q4 X0 Z6 S
2 i6 N8 K# F! _0 N
This sack of flesh and bones that we humans survive in, if it fatefully lands in a city, will need the7 g' A0 D' C2 c/ e' v+ ]

7 T/ U8 K8 v4 `4 cconstant support of money. Otherwise, it will fall with a thump. Some of you may argue: “That’s
/ t# y* g. r, q) L0 p
- E4 q( D- \# _- C% @; `( A% \. Fnot quite possible!” But in the city, one is forced to be keenly aware of the power of money. Any% N! v5 q% ]2 G6 i" Z. F/ n7 y

7 I7 |+ c6 x/ p) N% x" oactivity—be it eating, buying clothes, and seeing the doctor, sleeping, even going to the
6 |; B2 d" W0 |9 d7 _( d0 m( J9 i! h- v/ A) R6 N
toilet—calls for money. It is exactly how the saying goes: “Money is not almighty, but without6 ], H8 K4 \; G! M8 {

( E  v2 a! P/ m: vmoney nothing can be done.”
" b5 n$ N4 C$ R4 p; H9 Q4 p8 }
) |3 T; N5 d; R& d, P没有钱,都市人的一切生存活动都不得不停滞。为了五蕴所构建的这部机器能正常运转,$ k7 G9 H" {; D, S8 `2 |

8 q% q: c/ o  R1 a人不得不像奴仆一样,为这部机器的能源——钱财而搏斗。我时常在想,如果人能像蚯蚓: O8 P5 g3 C8 s6 J; N

3 _" w$ T  {' w- H3 T5 w; b9 g一样吃土也能生存该多好啊!但现实无情地告诉我,城市人要寻求生存的因是异常困难的* c0 q5 e2 U' y
9 Z( ]4 _" }. R. t: h: F, `& F$ O5 q

8 w0 d4 s# B& `  s) Q, u1 ^0 S) B& d
1 Z0 m2 N' V! ~' ^3 ZWith no money, all living activities in the city have to come to a halt. In order to have our body5 N* Q) Y* v$ P; H6 M" u

# s: D- s4 Z. v% B0 }. _: Lmachine, the composite of five aggregates, function normally; humans have to struggle like
  e. u5 c- Z: O  A. z. }% C5 V% B( [% ^) O
slaves to garner the source of its fuel—money. I often think, wouldn’t it be wonderful if humans
" V. I  m; X9 y; h6 J1 d, r' ^2 W# R+ O* Z$ ~8 l' P
could survive just by imbibing soil like the earthworm! But cruel reality tells me otherwise: for
5 c* _9 I3 I" j  ~
5 m7 _7 T7 |' W1 j0 Jpeople living in the city, the provisions to survive are by no means easy to come by.
  j5 K: I8 R( E) @0 G$ v* b
. o+ p) O! y, s; I& ?0 E8 [, u所以,城市的人只有忙忙碌碌。不论他是谁,都会感受为钱财奔波而带来的痛苦。以前以
" @) g2 e( M' a, J; W
2 W1 P/ |( o' l& y/ }为城市人过着天人一般的日子,现在方知,他们更是备受煎熬啊!这一切,令我想起山里
$ I& ^) {9 V4 ]. ~( z* Q6 X. [8 b, |# f
的修行人。在山里,除了食物,不需要为更多的事操心,生存的因自然具足。同样是1000! B( q7 r! d/ \* \' n% Q- ?
4 @& _# A( P3 W  t( A
元,在山里,就是腰板挺直的大富翁;然而在城市里,却有捉襟见肘、相形见绌的感觉。

+ @; ^. k  `& [3 z/ C% t% X) P
+ c8 B* S) E- WConsequently, city folks are reduced to being always on the run. The anguish of having to work
+ P) z8 t  L; ?  F; E& x# f4 r$ ?$ L8 d& ~
hard for money is felt by practically everyone. Previously I had the illusion that people in the city
7 @+ C- a$ O  \: m7 ^, y4 T- e7 r. e% Z) o7 N
live like celestial beings; only now do I come to see the extra agony they have to endure. This3 ]9 _* t# f. p! n/ C, ^. i
+ o1 r% C* e. f
reminds me of those spiritual seekers deep in the mountains where the environment is naturally
7 g7 B* M  N8 y$ q' K/ n4 a4 x
3 V8 C9 {' c2 r) w5 D: h& H$ Kconducive to survival. Other than food, there are not too many things to worry about, and a+ O" g+ O" W/ _% O- z, z+ c1 J
, A5 w0 M" K) b- h1 g' i
person with 1,000 yuan can stand tall and be considered a rich person. While in the city, the
2 K! N- Y  p1 }, _/ x/ x6 x5 l1 j3 D9 s- t6 r
same amount of money won’t go too far; one is unable to make ends meet and will feel a sense
% |3 z  A' X, K6 L! ], X# X
$ v$ ^- B/ z" C7 N) U* T8 Cof inferiority.
9 j4 g9 I) y# C/ B8 N* E' `6 M6 ]
7 w4 |5 q: f3 G$ `( l' M作为修行人,就是应当以积累圣者七财为荣,积累世间钱财为耻,视清贫为最好的伴侣。
" h9 a6 D) l( y! q3 u8 A+ s9 }0 a6 i$ ]/ v8 y
噶当派大德们最推崇的教言就是:

4 J$ h. b0 H  T' ^
7 L3 C+ i2 x% \, R4 v0 i" FA spiritual seeker should be defined as one who is proud of accruing the seven noble riches, who& r% _$ b! q4 D0 A7 c
) m6 s% X" t8 z- P% [* M# t; Q" `
is ashamed of amassing worldly possessions, and who regards poverty as a dear companion. The% s0 M3 ^$ m  g5 I
1 h/ D6 }7 H7 u' ~$ V; V# ~
most celebrated teaching among the Kadampa masters is:5 a  g* w& h4 M& G
; |* B& Z0 Y0 {/ S
“心依于法,法依于贫,贫依于死,死依于壑。”
) J. i' {! b4 H/ v/ M

8 `& o) F/ h' w) b! V6 }; u% lBase your mind on the Dharma,5 ^) x" j' P( i7 q8 `$ b" \8 T' E2 P" k
5 c! H1 G6 i$ ^% q( g
Base your Dharma on a humble life,
; K0 @/ k) d; j7 Z( _
" Q% ~. ]* r: O$ t+ W; O) j( GBase your humble life on the thought of death,
0 ^3 E  t6 L% X6 P4 g: {7 g. M# J, {
Base your death on a lonely cave.
  t3 Z+ [4 y; m6 e, Q, q7 ^( n5 L* x8 v  D, D# W
富贵荣华足以使人痴迷,而贫贱却足以使人睿智。

* K0 y1 k; u- lWealth and power make one obsessive and indulgent, while poverty and humility impart to one4 ?' I/ f/ [  d2 g; Y; }* t* {

: |- \  @; b% w  T' g% wvision and wisdom.8 x3 O4 o0 I$ e, o2 s2 K

* p. _. f' c6 g: c8 I  ?: {+ Y汉地也有“一等和尚轻飘飘,二等和尚一大包,三等和尚压弯了腰”的说法
; D9 \3 Q4 u  p+ l- P1 S

( o9 U2 I" q" |: T. ]There is also a saying in the Han area: “The monk of the highest caliber is light and at ease, the
/ o2 }" q7 {3 N1 ]% M6 n  X& u4 ]% T4 G' h+ w& F. J7 N
monk of the second rank holds a big sack, the monk of the third rank stoops with weight.”
0 P" O- g' Z8 {: @& W9 N9 K( F+ e: ^: E5 I* X( O8 Q0 ]( T7 y
一位藏地的大德,在英国作学者期间,每月发工资前,就将上月的节余全部布施,自己却
( V* O5 R5 m$ p$ |9 H! y0 Q4 _; N( @
穿着破旧的衣衫。很多慕名而去拜见他的人,都难以将眼前这个外表寒碜的人,与修证圆
6 ^) \# _. K: ~" E* |9 z7 B* z2 M  b9 q
满、学富五车的藏地著名大成就者的名称联系在一起。这种行为,实在令人赞叹。

Some time ago, an erudite Tibetan went to England as a visiting scholar. Each month before

+ d6 P4 }4 C6 h! ~) u1 upayday, he would offer all the money he saved from the previous month to charity, keeping for
1 N* _% N( p' ]9 h9 c$ s' m
5 v! J6 W/ }7 f8 V# Uhimself only old ragged clothes. When visitors sought him out with admiration, they found it% Q4 G' E/ v" M5 Z3 t
6 _% K- k/ R: F4 |% h
hard to match the humble, scrubby person they saw with the famous Tibetan siddha of perfect$ O! q! M& K7 A9 ?3 o3 c
2 |  A* S5 w1 m2 X
learning and accomplishment. His conduct deserves our highest praise.
& Z- A5 g. F  {! O+ C
4 U8 o$ m8 p5 T无数的大德们都为我们做出了表率,我们实应心无旁骛地依止于贫穷。$ O. C$ D/ W% I# C1 t2 x3 a

7 B9 o3 O( t6 g( ~8 l4 w* b3 _$ b5 WInnumerable sages have shown us perfect examples; we should abide in poverty without the% O) K) Z( M* s3 {

) @' s1 }2 L1 g: oslightest second thought.
