闽南佛学院后面有一座小山,其高度虽不能与雪域的名山相提并论,但于此地也可算是登" {' y* [9 Q: J5 B

) f" Y; J" _# k, h& |( D" ~高望远之绝佳胜地,当地人称之为五老山。登上山巅,整个厦门市区一览无余。令人顿生6 c# S/ R, C+ T9 V

0 q' ^0 W. o; a/ w1 O  E“登五老而小闽”之感。
# E8 y" `+ ^. s

/ W% y7 j$ R3 f, i  [A small hill called Wu Lau Mountain by the locals rises behind Minnan Buddhist Academy.' Z6 b/ i& n8 o  w. ?+ z4 Y. l) R" f
! N8 a4 \$ p( J; I8 I7 O
Though lacking the imposing height of those in the Tibetan snow land, it nonetheless is8 e# h( i/ s/ Z
5 `; c; {4 s$ f+ F. @6 g
considered a great local spot to hike in order to enjoy a panoramic view of the area surrounding- Z8 W- x, @" }) X: J. m7 t

6 z, {7 u) m4 C: l8 {: o* N% Vit. Once at the peak and seeing the whole of Xiamen city, it’s easy to feel that “up on the Wu Lau,
" Y9 S$ M% }: T$ V1 u8 [
+ W& E0 k6 M% Q2 |1 tthe Min Province is shrunken.”
0 O2 ^1 R1 a' c. N" J. V9 Q! w7 @% ]9 }/ v" e: t( k) i
山上树林繁茂、绿草丛生、鸟儿啁啾、春虫呢喃,真乃一修行之好去处。% p# |1 |2 A; I9 F2 D
* d1 g; s+ r6 i4 y  ^$ u
This hill is lush with dense trees, green with grass, and vibrant with the twittering of birds as well3 n+ K8 v( K9 H" |4 w

; q$ Y' e/ K6 b$ W" bas the chirping of insects. It’s an excellent place to do spiritual practice.
$ N; J+ ^4 q. l& c
0 k1 q9 i. }' E/ |; ~2 d半山腰有一“那兰若处”,为当地人时常拜望之胜地。我与济群法师的交谈处就选择于此$ Z, }9 ?; V3 Q6 s& R$ J! R% O
( z% `! W6 a0 i" l% M" q+ `; r, m
。济群法师培养了大批僧才,其培养的僧尼与知识分子已遍布各地。为广弘佛法所作之努( e; K: T7 P! q- a
  A" _# l% a: K, h) ?: C! {% M( u
力,也受到同道的认同。与之交谈,深感惬意。

( G0 _" p$ E+ ]8 M
Halfway to the mountaintop is the Arinya Place, a sanctuary visited often by local residents. It is

also where Dharma Teacher Jiqun and I have planned to meet and chat with each other. Dharma, ^8 q# W9 G) O' s% O
1 W) {  X9 J" S/ [" g( H
Teacher Jiqun has long endeavored in spreading the Buddhadharma and is well-respected in
+ z: n( Y2 M* g0 Q: C) [1 h6 C/ H. h+ Y; r3 F
Buddhist circles for his accomplishment. He has trained many monks, nuns, and lay professionals
8 a3 k/ O; `/ i1 i+ k
( D# V0 w8 ~$ W9 F, W, ywho are now carrying out Dharma activities in many places. It’s a great pleasure to have a chance
; X, x! D; l0 {) i& d% J! z  ?( J4 v* q8 ]
to talk with him.9 Q  |$ K$ V! ^" \& P

1 |8 U; |8 x7 A# H0 ?$ n一边品着闽南人最喜欢的“功夫茶”,一边交流心得。我谈到了藏地依止上师的方式、传$ s' N* }+ Z, j! Z
/ G. S8 u, d$ X# S* H# o" d- Q
统以及前辈大德依止上师的感人事迹。感人之处,不免令其赞叹不已。我又谈到了闻思修
! ]- C" x, l8 u" c/ t$ n' r8 c( y9 m3 S0 c  T  t7 R9 T- w
行不可偏废的重要意义。他感慨道,在五浊兴盛之今世,通过闻思修行建立正知正见,消
9 p; W/ [$ p6 z7 ~$ U: u
: v) Q' C/ F8 K  O4 J  o" h* P除烦恼非常重要。他的观点令我有“伯牙子期”之感。的确,佛法的真正目的是为了消除
$ I) W& O! t* X( Q  o& K0 i- H, o: V
烦恼,若不能将佛法运用于实际生活,融入自己的相续,其他一切形象上的建道场、造佛) F" v/ u" P( q
/ O3 e3 a5 J% I" n' S1 f
像都是空谈。只可惜人们往往不明其理,真是令人叹息。
0 A/ L7 q1 w! ^( [: ?1 E

% p' A/ |* g8 H9 SSipping Kung Fu tea, the chosen beverage of Min people, we exchanged our thoughts and$ e3 x% N7 s% H% ~" _7 u6 E
4 j0 Y5 j% e8 a/ b' X& Z% z" Y) P
experiences. I mentioned the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, its way of following spiritual
7 \: J& e0 A4 H' I; G5 A& C2 a$ C6 x9 M$ e' n+ W
teachers, and the many heart-rending stories of past great masters in this regard. We paused to! ^" `7 \9 T" h* ?$ C
' |1 r. H* O& b( T
admire some of the most inspiring ones. I also stated the central role of listening to, pondering,
: G5 t+ X4 t4 z- b
1 U0 v+ u' ]; H, F; \1 D: L# n& {and meditation on the teachings; none of them can be spared. He agreed with a sigh that, indeed
( T2 s- _7 A* B/ O3 b( o) o/ R* D( I1 X8 e8 o0 V6 }7 j
in this time of five degenerations, it’s crucial for people to work on these three wisdom tools in
6 l4 E" c( r- N' S% T
0 {4 |, g" T2 x+ R' Jorder to establish the right view and uproot afflictive emotions. His words lent me the feeling
( }. L$ F6 {, r8 f+ n: A: q0 I7 @/ i- }. b
akin to Boya meeting his soul mate Ziqi. Certainly, the real purpose of Buddhism is to empower; A' E6 A" A! b/ b3 U& S2 R% n1 m% C

3 a) R  M, _- e8 y) tpeople to overcome confused emotions. Unless Buddha’s teachings are infused into one’s own
% ]% D1 a3 g+ d# V4 Z/ S0 V2 ^9 G# b6 f6 b' {0 V1 E; B( P4 V0 L
minds and applied to daily activities, all other feats such as building temples and erecting statues
# ?) D- G; W# ^3 }) m  u1 x8 \, P8 ]  k' w/ O
are but superficial and meaningless. Regrettably, very few people grasp this truth. It‘s a shame!
! k, q) Q0 ~2 `# s; j' R! o' S4 [) g3 N6 n
不知不觉,日已偏西。我不得不起身告辞,但愿此生我们还能有缘再次促膝长谈。只怕世
/ a+ n2 L" {; a
: D, X  m9 w0 k  f; Q事无常,此愿难遂了!

pervading all places, I am afraid this wish may not come true!
