读小学期间,我一直住在他家。每天天还没亮,他就开始起床,一边念咒,一边磕头。饭

& I( U2 N) B7 Z7 ]/ z' j/ S) obreakfast, he would read books and go over his daily Dharma practices. He sat in meditation in8 d, \5 a2 n# t, ] o' n
) j' w0 {5 V9 t
the afternoon and recited scriptures in the evening. For over 10 years he kept the same schedule4 w1 @/ n7 Q2 M/ v2 N& e
& N m' }/ b3 i& v6 O, h' e, f
over and over again without interruption.

的人大多是三天打鱼,两天晒网,心情好的时候就精进,心情不好的时候就散乱的情形,

才知道他的毅力的确值得赞叹。

! P5 m, ?7 P! n8 Jspecial about him. But now I see myself and others only doing spiritual practices in fits and starts.9 q/ q8 x+ \* P
/ E& v: Z$ B4 s# O+ t# ^, \We get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become" q4 i2 k8 w! H
& U( h$ ^' @4 r4 h$ R4 i' ?% i) Zdistracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more2 `% K+ y! Q4 v0 D

admirable.

+ K& s! w3 D3 H7 ]4 x0 z E# v( E到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,

实在令我惭愧。! l# H. s+ k$ f( d1 L( W! S

At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing

number that could remain unrecognized without adding it all up. Comparing my meager" h& L7 v* p- \* N& O& z O( Y
" a$ q! x' Z, Q$ a7 P2 W
diligence with his, I really feel ashamed.

$ [: o3 X+ z8 e- c9 f" S《大乘阿毗达磨论》云:“诸资粮道修行人应精进闻思,诸根调柔,饮食适当,上、下半

夜不入眠(意为只睡中夜)。”

senses, eat appropriately, and avoid sleeping in the early or late part of the night (that is, to sleep& X9 d5 }) o; N$ o3 a' T! c j
; g& `& `2 B, v/ s& Y: g" T0 C; o9 Tonly in the middle section of the night).”

“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”* ^- u1 H( W' [, H3 ~! F/ b- w1 b% O

Without adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished., L, J3 X) G3 x4 R

Without the pouring together of many tiny streams, there will be no big oceans.

9 @4 T% m3 }. b* c4 B% uAn on-and- off diligence amounts to nothing; only the diligence over a lifetime is what counts.
