他身材魁梧,永远手持念珠,口诵经咒。他的脸上有一疤痕,是因年轻时走路去拉萨,途& v! p# E/ q+ U" x
7 c! X( w2 b- n5 B! x8 X' C中遭遇强盗所致。这不但没有影响他的形象,反而使他显得更加可爱。& g5 w& f/ c: |) l7 I- `; f
) G( N* J; H; T3 a5 e4 H9 SHe was a man of strong build. His hand perpetually moved the mala beads and his mouth: F& A7 P- u& d

: T1 j$ p% B% v9 yin a way made him even more likable.

读小学期间,我一直住在他家。每天天还没亮,他就开始起床,一边念咒,一边磕头。饭8 k& S8 h3 b9 J/ f- O' x: R

( d9 w1 y! l' ~! r9 Q+ ?- Wthe afternoon and recited scriptures in the evening. For over 10 years he kept the same schedule

Z0 `2 r' a: ~/ oover and over again without interruption.. y3 k! {5 d+ H* ^1 d0 g
- y6 y6 n; V' j1 c当时我以为,作为修行人本来就应当这样,所以不足为奇。如今,当我意识到我和我周围6 q, ^+ s2 O" R3 Z6 o& q
% M2 A* t6 z) t7 H" w
的人大多是三天打鱼,两天晒网,心情好的时候就精进,心情不好的时候就散乱的情形,5 S1 Q3 ?9 N9 ^& Z) X J
9 h( l$ u+ ^6 _/ P- t1 {6 I才知道他的毅力的确值得赞叹。

At that time I took it for granted that all practitioners should behave as he did, and felt nothing

$ R+ r8 ^, [7 U- A5 _% J+ W5 jspecial about him. But now I see myself and others only doing spiritual practices in fits and starts.* `, J! @: z8 {" r* o# d% _2 h
. V3 V# h/ X/ s4 o; U; k
We get serious only when we are in good spirits but as soon as our mood falls, we become) T, `$ t. a9 P; ` o' R. m/ H2 x; l
6 U0 v5 M( F2 H8 h b0 k9 ndistracted and lag behind in practice. The glaring contrast makes his perseverance all the more
% x; X2 c& I1 i2 x+ ]% f0 s" `& }& a5 k5 ^
admirable.
% o4 V9 r5 n9 x0 _$ o9 H4 @1 b
% u; M: V# u4 g5 y! C: p: W6 B到1987年他去世,已念了五亿多心咒。真是不算不知道,一算吓一跳。和他的精进相比,

( l& Q( j' M$ U7 B实在令我惭愧。+ P/ N7 Z0 g+ j- v/ }( E
% J$ [, I- g c: H% t& f+ l! @At the time of his passing at age 87, he had accumulated 500 million mantras, an astonishing" a c, s. y0 x! `
( Y3 O( t+ u+ R( X: C# Vnumber that could remain unrecognized without adding it all up. Comparing my meager4 o9 y: |2 G5 o8 n" f+ }

diligence with his, I really feel ashamed.

- T1 t/ M$ [: V- A5 g( `& psenses, eat appropriately, and avoid sleeping in the early or late part of the night (that is, to sleep2 \8 V, m2 Z8 a# {+ b
+ X/ `" U9 Q6 l
only in the middle section of the night).”

“不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。”

Without adding up many little steps, a journey of a thousand miles cannot be accomplished.

+ r% ~" D8 Q) f. T一时的勤奋不算什么,一生的勤奋才是最重要的。

An on-and- off diligence amounts to nothing; only the diligence over a lifetime is what counts.
