长久——索达吉堪布
修行是一项旷日持久的艰苦过程。无垢光尊者说:“修行不能仅靠几天的努力,需要长期的
8 i- _9 ~9 N% T( _7 [" v, @4 z) I奋斗。”如果能长期坚持不懈地精勤,既可磨炼意志,又可积攒资粮。
  @- X0 B* g$ u9 q; y* mSpiritual practice is a challenging process that takes time and endurance. Longchen Rabjam says:
4 s4 g- |3 Z4 a3 e“Spiritual practice is not a few days’ effort only; it is a long struggle.” By practicing diligently and 1 v' C) g$ t. v  X
persistently for a long period, not only we can sharpen our willpower but also accumulate vast
5 b+ b  e6 I+ J8 E/ E  M( ]0 A" fmerit.
% {7 r2 D# `2 ?) I' T* _; a记得小时候有一位叫扎拉的阿姨,不仅年轻美丽,而且诚信佛法。她曾跟随村里人一起到
7 g: m1 w% F1 @拉萨朝圣。30年前,她曾在上师前发愿,每天磕头100个,念诵极乐愿文1遍,金刚萨埵心+ t* _" A' G! J) y) \8 o2 X
咒10000遍。当时尚处于宗教受到严重摧毁的恐怖时期,念经诵咒尚可默默完成,但磕头6 I1 K/ ~9 C  x5 a! t2 s
就有很大困难。除了在家里,她常在放牧时偷偷到一山洞里磕头,并叮嘱我为其放哨。常1 M6 W( [; p8 U& X! e, U6 f9 D7 S
常趁没人之时,我就提醒她:“你该磕头了!”( _2 Y* Q: T6 m0 m3 Z* {
I remember when I was a child, there was a beautiful young aunt called Drala. As a devout ' y) u; w7 ~) L/ x
Buddhist, she made a pilgrimage to Lhasa with local villagers and pledged to her teacher that   C/ z. _9 G, c& o
every day, she would perform 100 prostrations, read once the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the
- n, J+ |/ {/ F6 Q8 j) u0 a& ~Pure Land of Great Bliss, and recite 10,000 times the Vajrasattva mantra. That was 30 years ago
1 w5 q2 k( ]$ Hwhen religions were being destroyed ruthlessly. In that horrific period, one might manage to 4 G: Y' G% k8 ?- }' ^; w& X
recite mantras or read sutras silently without getting caught; but prostrations presented a bigger . s8 B# p% p9 ?% T- ]8 k
problem. Besides doing it at home, she also tried the accumulation in mountain caves when
' F+ x# b" B# a2 E, l  W, [6 \herding, and would always ask me to stand guard for her. When no one was around, I would
6 }- M! r: o  w" xalways remind her: “It’s time for you to do prostrations!”
! m% H& a3 m- C2 i时光荏苒,30年时光匆匆流逝。其间我经历了读书、出家等一系列变故。去年7月,我在
. `4 o& t+ \& s' G老家碰见她,她的脸上已刻满了历经沧桑的痕迹。想起当年磕头的经历,连忙问她:“您还! C1 }# J8 E  _- Z: e
在继续磕头念咒吗?”她回答我:“从来没间断过,即使生了大病,病后仍然补上。现在时
, t6 X, j2 R6 Z8 G间更多了,可以念更多的咒子。”“那这么多年您一共磕了多少头?念了多少咒?”“没统计过  M/ \5 A) u4 |% @. t, |6 S( }( G( w
,我想只要好好修持就行了,没有去统计什么数量。”
) r' L: A0 k0 E6 r' u7 z% ETime elapsed quickly; 30 years had slipped by before I met her in my hometown last July. During # x3 T( s2 ~& o) I
this period I had gone through stages of schooling and become a monk. For her, the experience 3 J2 Q- A$ A# e! w
of life’s ups and downs had chiseled her face. Reminiscing about the old days, I quickly asked her: . [; c  R. Q' D, Z1 h1 j
“Are you still continuing prostrations and recitations?” She answered: “Certainly. I’ve never
7 F* u4 I; W. z, [; T9 X3 }, bstopped. Even if I missed them during my episodes of severe illness, I always managed to make 8 o& p: M2 H: U) ]/ ~
them up after recovery. Now, with more free time on hand, I can recite even more mantras.” I % U8 d' x5 P( w- P/ H$ Q
asked, “Then, through all these years, how many prostrations and mantra recitations have you 8 \5 I5 G+ E* }, H
done in total?” She replied, “I have not really kept track of them. I feel practicing alone is good
& ?* S; |4 X: S$ ?- Nenough and have never cared to count the numbers.”  @& d$ i" K( L8 \- I" p
我在心里为其保守地算了一下。这30年她至少磕头1,095,000个,念诵极乐愿文10950遍,
' J: T( k6 }# M+ Z) Q5 y金刚萨埵心咒109,500,000遍。这对于很多人来说不着啻为天文数字。扎拉是藏族中极其, g; F; S$ I+ V" Q& M$ [6 r' S. J4 [
普通的一位教徒,既没有名声,也不算最精进。但她能30年如一日地以磨杵成针的毅力锲1 _" a* P2 h, v3 _: L5 `
而不舍地修行。实为难能可贵。
) ^* ^: C: d6 g4 [I made a mental calculation. Conservatively, in the past 30 years, she could have done at least
" X  F) k, s6 q% _1,095,000 prostrations, read the Aspiration Prayer to Be Born in the Pure Land of Great Bliss 9 {" I! T1 o9 m$ O2 }' d
10,950 times, and recited the Vajrasattva mantra 109,500,000 times. For many people, these ! l3 @( O- Y! M; a9 O
figures may seem astronomical. Drala is all but an average practitioner commonly seen among
5 Y' p9 ~/ T- K" i7 gTibetans, little known, nor extraordinarily diligent. Nonetheless, that she has kept her practice
. x( i# U; G0 F8 M8 l) dthroughout 30 years with the perseverance of “grinding an iron pestle down to a needle” is truly # i! ~* W2 K' u% R) D
praiseworthy.
, c2 e1 [! [5 t: z# y) m& \9 ]9 T现在有的人修完一遍50万加行,就四处炫耀,唯恐他人不知。扎拉却能默默无闻,从不间; _' G3 F+ E+ V& Z1 n
断,的确令人叹服。反观自己,虽然在上师前发了愿,却没有如法行持,虽然被别人称为* O, I! T$ L) f* Y; `0 H
法师,却不如一个普通人,真令我汗颜。古人云:“骐骥一跃,不能千里;驽马十驾,功在, U. Q" i& s6 e. f. W, v
不舍。”7 {2 g" r2 T1 p9 q1 i1 T
These days there are practitioners who can’t wait to flaunt around their completion of one cycle 1 X- U( m+ c- R" T/ X
of 500,000 preliminaries, lest someone would miss their accomplishment. Drala, on the other 8 y8 L4 a3 ~9 q) p2 S; N) ]" _
hand, cares not for recognition but only to practice persistently; she is indeed admirable.
8 M6 R1 }' n; k. h2 n4 L% LChecking my own progress, I had made pledges before my master, but I have not practiced $ d+ J1 F, K3 U7 W
authentically; I have been addressed as a spiritual teacher, but I am no better than common
# j1 j3 w' h* y4 O' K3 vpeople. Shouldn’t I blush with shame?/ ~4 q! P% \0 B. {, b- a# J
The ancient saying goes:8 R6 d7 y5 X- N2 C( d. ^
One gallop of a noble steed remains one gallop of distance, not 10 gallops.3 {' `) N+ q: F# H1 E0 J. S7 {: G
Ten days of effort of pulling a cart by an inferior horse, on the other hand, would cover 10 days’ ( Z/ N* h) ?  _  [- n: l9 o
distance.
! k9 P; g! y6 M4 [1 P, d/ R9 O4 FSuccess comes from doing the task persistently.! t1 n6 a2 U4 g) a/ n
如果每个修行人都能有此精神,有一分付出,就一定会有一分收获的。
3 {! V5 m& ]& o, n% L% A; ~* CEvery practitioner should embrace such an enduring spirit. With every ounce of effort put in, 7 U$ j9 |2 X5 _8 x: `- X
there is bound to be an ounce of reward.
