今天是“五·四”青年节,从1919年五四运动至今已经历了近百年的历史。随着时代的变
; L- o6 V& \+ s7 ^  g$ N. r
9 R  n# q2 K% n5 H迁,青年们早已不必再为反封建、反压迫而战,他们以各种形式庆祝着这一节日。0 g4 v: o9 W6 B% ?9 Q
6 O8 ~! ~5 R$ x8 w
Today is Youth Day; it was more than a hundred years ago when the May 4th Movement shook/ s- f  D# X6 t+ Z2 k3 q$ Z

6 G' t2 ?! O. p; Jthe nation in 1919. As time goes by, however, young people these days no longer emphasize! `0 _' T: ^6 _
# Z) S) K9 N+ k7 C5 j$ d
fighting feudalism or oppression as their earlier peers did. Instead, they choose to celebrate their
4 O- o0 W1 }/ }3 u5 o' }; F& m2 G$ g& X$ \6 ]+ G- `4 A. O8 ^7 O+ t
day in various ways.3 M3 G. m  C# E$ {

0 `- ~  H! W! n3 Y: z我也加入了一帮有很多青年人组成的行列,举行了一次大规模的放生活动。三艘船承载着; A: j8 s. k9 l$ w

, Q9 t3 u% f- C  y. U+ {( L# \饱受死亡恐惧的海底居民,浩浩荡荡地驶往深海,除了厦门本地的信众,来自各地寺院、9 b  a6 h$ O9 l( Q2 }, }, W( H3 y# z
8 Y* J1 ]" g8 ?2 {! s7 J
佛学院的出家人,福州、台湾、香港等地的居士,约200名道友都参加了这次放生活动,出* R, k. W2 [1 Y7 ^7 K0 @1 |
; A* I+ O; }: x) g) T' L
家人的红黄僧衣,在家人五彩缤纷的各式服装,在蓝色大海的衬托下,形成了一道道靓丽1 l9 ~4 X8 u4 a' Z7 I: v! Y0 b, T

; m% Y0 U. t! y( X' a! ?的风景。

I found myself in the company of young people to carry out large-scale life liberation. Three ships# P* T/ q1 ?$ r, r( J

& c! }# b# Z1 T% {+ eloaded with many sea creatures whose lives were once at grave stake sailed off the coast in an! J. j' d+ I5 c/ E! K
3 O2 L4 a" v7 T* y! J2 l
impressive formation. The 200 or so participants included local Buddhists from Xiamen, monks
" j) |0 l: h9 U; G
" V; `, j" x8 X" X6 d9 Rand nuns from nearby monasteries and Buddhist Academies, as well as lay practitioners from
/ x! o- g. c, G3 b/ d
0 S9 e7 P: a' Z! d  n( w' e7 y0 M# s2 ?Fuzhou, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Against the blue sea, the maroon and yellow monastic robes
7 `8 y6 ~$ K& @$ F! v( G6 p  Y6 Z- q7 U
and laities’ attire of various colors stood out vividly and brightly. It was quite a beautiful sight to# ]% H( j) e/ N- d  q4 @
, A1 Y- X% x8 p1 W) t. j7 E
behold.

7 \5 j- K/ f) [$ D# x: J; B. _在我身居其中的四个月期间,每当午餐和晚餐之时,窗户外面时常会漂来宰杀海鲜的血腥! Q- P( {) a$ K7 l) g$ Y& [  K

5 G- ]8 H! H4 I) v* Y气息,使这座沿海城市纯净的空气受到了玷污,更使来自藏地的我和同伴食不下咽,将这* x9 w: Q% i) O% @( Q

些可怜的鱼虾从屠刀下解救出来一直是我们未了的心愿。虽然今天解救的生灵与整个城市, N$ a5 ^! \. x' F) H3 Z

$ d* r0 f5 S- @" C% t$ q的杀生数量难以相比,但也能让我们稍感欣慰。

/ r( Q- n3 k; c7 a$ G) m1 R0 Q! p  b# y* ]4 @5 `
During my four-month stay in this coastal city, at lunch or dinner time the stench of seafood
6 h. }6 K* D7 l$ G8 _+ o1 q" N& e9 ]& r! l
being prepared often wafted through the open window, polluting the fresh air of the shore, and

) a3 g5 ?- @' a, F0 u1 e1 cmaking my friend, also from Tibet, and me lose our appetites. We have long wished to save the  y( A# j& j/ _" U3 U+ R
3 u" D0 D  W& q. c$ N5 Q2 _
poor fish, shrimp, and so forth from meeting their ends at the knife, it is only today that we have/ ^3 n8 I& x0 h2 T; @0 D
) Y6 N  F9 x0 k; G7 m1 O1 z
come to fulfill it. Even though the number of lives we are saving is incomparable with that of
  {  k2 N2 X; D. t1 |2 ~
. x3 s( ^5 k$ s. w8 e  G( ybeing killed in the whole city, we are still grateful for the opportunity.
) }- M$ |, S( {; L; k; T: k0 \
$ D0 A$ ~2 Y& V+ ~记得曾有一县令名曰潘公,在他上任期间,制定县规命令百姓不得入江湖渔捕,犯者加罪
, g5 ^- M" \- u8 O, r
* U+ `4 ?/ t6 W+ `* g9 ^。当他后来去任时,水中发出号呼之声,如丧考妣。当地人听到后,莫不叹异。不知道什
# z5 k9 g) ?3 O$ Q, B* }; X& c, {) C+ b! T/ ^% }& z
么时候厦门也能有这样的好县令,也能使这些生灵免受刀俎之苦。不过,此地的放生之风9 l7 U. O7 J5 ^6 z
* o5 f4 Y( ?$ [' n- F
还算比较盛行,听说是一位居士发心印了一万册《放生功德文》,广为结缘,才使此风日
! o* B8 x) D/ x5 s5 A% m( l# d$ l9 ?" q/ e; W7 e
益兴盛,继而流传下来的。

7 P1 U; z; T! a, ~; W8 P) B  Q0 h0 S7 W; Q
There was once a county magistrate name Poon Gong who forbade his subjects from catching' w* i. s. f7 ]3 J" A( G0 m
4 i7 a; B2 {" X4 P1 u$ m' J
any live fish by instigating severe punishments for perpetrators. Years later when he was about, @3 J1 o6 m4 m/ |" ?- I
$ [- R( l: @5 D
to leave his official post, a wailing sound as grief-stricken as if one’s parents had been lost was: E2 ?9 G' x- q* t1 Y- M0 D7 k

( O% l' T: a6 p& d2 c1 ]heard from the waters, filling people’s hearts with sadness and amazement. I often wonder
4 `& y9 Q# v- \% {& p* K) h$ H' p
4 c$ z3 U" e2 C/ w" cwhen such a benevolent county magistrate will appear again in Xiamen such that many beings" H0 u- e/ G8 I; T
- F& \6 S7 {. p" h9 v
will be saved from going under the knife. Nonetheless, the practice of lifesaving has been well
) R# @% Q7 q' B( F* `4 j
; \8 ?, Q3 x5 E) M" V+ R3 s2 u. _accepted here, due largely to, I was told, the free distribution of 10,000 booklets of The Merit of0 s5 k, _6 m" }* Q# l% t

7 f+ C% L, Z! M; n, C, TReleasing Live Beings by an aspiring layperson. The tradition thus has gradually flourished and$ T( y8 z( P( @6 t3 v. N

! A. K  M" }  b  t- j0 Zcome down to this day.: ~) e) ]9 a/ K; P
# ?1 l# @7 [$ m7 i* L
据说这是当地近年来规模最大的一次放生。不管规模大小,至少,这也是我们为这些生灵9 ~  k1 O# s- ]7 O

反对压迫而举行的一次抗议。善无大小,唯贵久长,日日增之,月月累之,但愿百年以后

,生灵涂炭的悲剧不会再上演了。

) H. o3 f1 _& hToday’s lifesaving activity reportedly is the largest one in recent years in the area. Regardless of3 |% F+ u5 c' t3 T- @- Y* p

8 S% i9 `. S, F0 C/ U+ t: ]% ewhether the magnitude is large or small, at least we have made a revolt against oppression on* y# r: B$ V0 |" V& k

. g! @+ G$ c4 @6 I: p8 H) C7 Gbehalf of these sea creatures. The value of good deeds depends not so much on their scale but
1 K( J1 g+ d6 W5 h, t( v) z4 Q8 @) H8 w3 @# U# j% {
more on their consistency. When virtues are practiced daily and enhanced monthly, we hope
1 f+ F# M8 B. S; @* O) z+ `, j$ I) P1 q5 L6 ]
that one hundred years from now, the tragedy of taking other beings’ lives will no longer exist.6 Y. z( q5 o4 V+ H" V
